September 18, 2019, Washington, D.C. – The Religious Freedom Institute (RFI) applauds today’s long-overdue Senate vote to confirm Robert Destro as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. Destro has served as a law professor at The Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law for 37 years and is the founding Director of its Interdisciplinary Program in Law & Religion.
“Bob Destro is one of the nation’s experts on human rights, both in terms of international law and the moral basis for human rights,” said Thomas Farr, president of the Religious Freedom Institute. “He is a veteran in this field,” Farr continued, “not only as a law professor and scholar, but as an activist in the best sense of that term. He has devoted his life to defending human rights for all people.”
The Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the Department of State is the senior human rights position in American diplomacy. This official has the lead in advancing human rights around the world on behalf of the American people, not simply as the right thing to do, but also as a strategic interest of the United States. Destro has the expertise, experience, and dedication to excel in both dimensions of this vital position.
