RFI President Eric Patterson joined The Drew Mariani Show on Relevant Radio this week to discuss the military offensive Azerbaijan is undertaking against ethnic Armenians in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. This overwhelmingly Orthodox Christian population has now fled en masse to Armenia after residing in Nagorno-Karabakh for centuries. Patterson remarked:
Since the fall of the Soviet Union, there has been warfare between [Azerbaijan and Armenia], both former Soviet republics, and their border has shifted at times. But what is really insidious in this case is the whole scale military attack on civilians and the further destruction that I expect we’ll see on religious and cultural sites…Azerbaijan has a track record of destroying Christian sites, [including] in the early 2000s they had destroyed of over 20,000 Christian tombstones…and almost 90 medieval churches…[These and related acts] are an historical erasure of a civilization.
