RFI President David Trimble recently joined an interview on “America Right Now” with Tom Basile to discuss the complex factors that continue to converge in Nigeria to make it the deadliest country in the world to be a Christian. Also joining the interview was Gia Chacon, Founder of For the Martyrs.
At one point during the conversation, Basile mentioned S.2747, the “Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025.” Introduced by Senator Ted Cruz (TX) in September, the bill directs the U.S. State Department to re-designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) and requires the imposition of sanctions. Basile asked Trimble why the U.S. government has been slow to respond to the spiraling conditions in Nigeria, hence making bills such as Senator Cruz’s necessary.
Trimble again noted the complexity of the situation in Nigeria as an obstacle to more decisive action, and he acknowledged that restoring Nigeria’s CPC designation (put in place during the first Trump administration and rescinded under President Biden) would be an important step. He also emphasized that equipping local actors on the ground to address the multiple layers of persecution must remain part of the picture.
